Graphics Issues
« on: July 07, 2016, 08:38:55 PM »
Hello all!

I recently purchased an ASUS "gaming" tower and I was wondering if someone could help me by telling me what settings are optimal for performance and graphics. Yesterday, while in OSUT training I was averaging about 30 fps which is rather unimpressive. I figured someone in here knows more about the advance graphics settings and could help me optimize my game. I have the latest driver supplied by GeForce and below are my system specs.

If you need to see more, the tower is this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-desktop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-silver-and-red/5070700.p?id=bb5070700&skuId=5070700

No upgrades, the only thing I've done is use GeForce to get their most current drivers.

Thanks for any and all help!

Man you could have built a better one for that price.

This is coming from a builder not a buyer.  :P

On another note geforce's optimization feature is pretty good at doing everything for you.

Yea, I know lol. And I did use the optimization tool. I get about 60 fps in singleplayer. But when I did OSUT class yesterday I struggled to maintain 30. Idk what was wrong. And when I would zoom in it would be laggy (drop in fps) for a couple seconds

I've heard of people prioritizing Arma 3 over all other processes at the current time. You might see a slight increase but I've never had to try that. I was getting 40-60 in that training. I got an i5-4590 and GTX960

Check out this thread for some other suggestions.

Try turning down your view distance, that is the single best thing to increase your fps in Arma.

Try this guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/arma/comments/2a21gi/arma_3_video_settings_that_significantly_reduce/ciqwf66

And if it that doesn't help and you want to go deeper: https://archive.is/eVLrL

Edit: DONOT use tbmalloc memory allocator as it makes the game unstable after the visual update came out.

Here's another thing to note:

TL:DR: Don't be concerned by FPS in ARMA multiplayer unless you're falling into the teens.  Your PC is fine.  ARMA is just weird.

Despite having an absolute rock and roll PC, in multiplayer, server performance heavily dictates your in game performance.  Even the very best servers I've ever been in, can only manage around 45 fps with 40+ people in game and if that's happening I'm ecstatic.  There are dozens of tips and tricks out there ranging from OS and registry fixes to overclocking and some that are downright weird.  If you'd like to see this in action, be the first one in a server with a good solid internet connection (50 mbps +) and watch how you should be holding around 60fps.  As each person joins, and as contact takes place on the other side of the map, you'll notice performance dropping.  Your good performance is not restricted to only single player either: try hosting a multiplayer session by yourself.  Are you running 60 fps?  I'm pretty sure you will be because you're the server and have a perfect connection to it.

Also, CPU performance is absolutely vital to ARMA 3.  My friend and I have two PC's that couldn't be more different: his essential specs are: 2nd gen i7-2600k (@ 3.4 GHz), 8GB RAM, GTX 1080, all on a 50 mbps cable connection.  My specs are: i7-5930k (@4.4 GHz), 16GB RAM, x2 GTX 760 SLI on a 120 mbps cable connection (same ISP).  We run identical fps in single player and multiplayer.  My CPU never even really gets hot either.  I hold a steady 60°C throughout nor do my GPU's ever really go north of 70°C.  Such a shame.  So many cores going to waste.  One day, gaming will catch up with multicore processors.  However my CPU 0 core during boot up of ARMA is something like this:

^^^^^^^

What he said.

I have a pretty good computer with a GTX980 and on a good day I'll get 30FPS in Arma.  That's just the way it is.  The benefit is that you have the power to turn up your settings to make the game look pretty nice or push out your draw distance and it won't affect the gameplay that much.
