S-2 Intelligence Methodologies
(TS) Throughout Operation Watchtower, S-2 has predominantly been operating on direct intelligence gathered from within missions. With the rapid rate of the 1-506 offensive, little time has been afforded to significant intelligence gathering efforts. With the NSLA offensive forcing a rebalancing towards defensive operations, S-2 is reviewing the overall intelligence strategy. A greater emphasis is being placed into Geospacial and Imagey intelligence (GEOINT/IMINT), with S-2 Operations Command in discussions with 39th Air Base Wing and USAFE to attempt to secure routine JSTARS GMTI (Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System Ground Moving Target Indication) tasking above Chernarus operations. Once key strategic sites can be resecured (in particular COP Lancaster), S-2 will be establishing Measurement and Signals Intelligence (MASINT) posts with a focus on radar-based early-warning systems. In the meantime, all troopers are reminded of the value of Human Intelligence (HUMINT) throughout their patrols.
(S) Additionally, S-2 has pulled data from Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) such as local news channels (see attached video), social media videos covering the conflict (mostly from civilians in the region) and public government data. S-2 reminds all troopers that intelligence can be sourced in a variety of ways during a patrol, all of which can contribute to S-2's understanding of the battlespace. Some examples include notes, maps, documents and computers found within NSLA installations, EPWs and functional radios. While S-2 is aware that this information is highly volatile and generally unreliable, when it comes to precise information, the quick access and rapid information transfer is used to paint a more clear picture of the events.
(TS) Moving forward, S-2 will be changing the amount and release methods of reports made available to 1-506 and supporting assets. Major situation changes or intelligence developments will continue to be released as ALCON INSCOM reports, with the appropriate security classifications. In addition, before each phase of operations, S-2 will review the objectives set forth by S-3 and provide additional insight into the intelligence and strategic considerations behind the objective. This review will be published to Section Leaders with codeword level clearance, and can be used by them to assist in planning their operations. These reports will contain facts and figures, but also speculation and assumption, so while they can assist in informing a decision, they are not intended as a hard-facts standalone report.
