SUBJECT: (C) THE KINGDOM OF SAHRANI

SITUATION: (C) RIOTS IN NORTH; ARMY MOBILIZING

ANALYST COMMENT: (C) A dozen far-left representatives have officially called for a new constitution. Immediately upon this call for a new constitution, which demands an end to the monarchy, all twelve representatives were arrested within the parliament building and a crowd gathering outside the building turned into a riot of pro-monarchy supporters. Three of the arrested representatives were injured by flying objects ranging from rocks to glass bottles; their staffers were harassed and many injuries were reported. Smoke was seen rising from the parking lot of the Parliament building where several violent rioters broke into the fenced area and burnt vehicles inside. Police were only able to retake control after calling on the Royal Sahrani Army Corps to supplement them with additional personnel and vehicles.

Immediately after the representatives were arrested, the motion was vetoed by the Speaker of the Parliament, a move that is only done when the motion is illegal or extremely controversial. However several district judges in the North of the kingdom have moved to file an injuction against the Speaker for abusing his power of veto. Towns in the north erupted into chaos and riots, and by morning many rioters still wandered the streets - some were armed with melee weapons. Many old Sahrani Peoples Republic flags were also seen flying amongst the rioters. The RSAC and Royal Federal Police were reported to be mounting a series of anti-riot crackdowns and are warning citizens in the North to stay indoors. Many injuries have been reported from area hospitals, and three deaths were reported across the North of the country in various riots. Several local city officials in the North are also reported missing, and others have sided with the rioters and demanded a vote be held in Parliament over the end of the monarchy.

The prosecutor has yet to approve formal charges against the representatives who were arrested. The Queen commands the military and it's almost certain she will order a crackdown on rioters, based on intelligence acquired from locals. Multiple reserve call-ups have gone out, and battalions of infantry have been observed mobilizing, including tanks and other armored vehicles. F-16 fighters of the RSAF's lone fighter squadron have made several sorties in North involving low altitude flyovers in a show of force. A crackdown is imminent, and likely some form of conflict between North and South once more.
