INTREP 03-24 Identification of SoAK Military Commander

All acronyms utilized in the following brief are proactively defined and utilized strictly for the streamlining of text and characters. All acronyms in the following report are defined/transcribed in full upon initial use and then abbreviated for subsequent use. The "Spoilers" marked part below contains utilized acronyms/abbreviations and their definitions and is closed simply to condense report size.
NOFORN - NO FOREIGN DISSEMINATION. Information may not be disseminated in any form to foreign governments, foreign nationals, foreign or international organizations, or non-U.S. citizens.
U - Unclassified. Used for government documents that do not merit a particular classification or which have been declassified. The information is low-impact, and therefore does not require any special protection, such as vetting of personnel.
C - Confidential. This is the lowest classification level of information obtained by the government. It is defined as information that would "damage" national security if publicly disclosed without the proper authorization.
S - Secret. Material that would cause serious damage to national security if it were publicly available.
INTREP - Intelligence Report. A document that provides a comprehensive understanding of a specific issue.
SIGINT - Signals intelligence. The act and field of intelligence-gathering by interception of signals, whether communications between people or from electronic signals not directly used in communication.
ODF - Operation Desert Fury.
SoAK - Sons of al-Karbouli.
ISOF BDE - Iraqi Special Operations Forces Brigade.
(S) INTREP 03-24(S) SIGINT targeting has successfully identified the Commander of SoAK forces within Al Anbar Governorate as former Iraqi General Asad Farid Abadi. Abadi is known as a very close friend of the SoAK leader Mohammed Nouri al-Karbouli. Abadi gained military influence through his finely attuned military acumen and vicious no-holds-barred nature.
(S) Abadi was born in July of 1975 and raised in his family home near Ramadi, Iraq. Following in the footsteps of an uncle, he joined the Iraqi army in 1995 as an officer cadet, graduating in 2000. As a young officer, Abadi climbed through the ranks serving in combat, support and staff officer positions. Early on in his career he was identified as a potential senior leader, mainly due to his close relationship with many senior officers and Baath Party elite. He earned the nickname of the “Warrior Lion” after single handedly killing Kurdish leaders in Northern Iraqi during an operation to attempt to rid the country of separatists.
(S) At the commencement of hostilities during the 2nd Gulf War, Abadi swiftly realised that Hussain’s and ultimately Iraq's survival was at risk. He resigned his commission and moved back to Al Anbar to take up a position as an advisor to the local governor. Here he was able to sew the seeds of discontent and gained a cadre of influential military and political allies.
(S) In 2013 after the fall of Saddam Hussein, Abadi, once again looking to reignite his military career, was recruited, trained and indoctrinated into the Iraqi Special Operations Forces Brigade (ISOF BDE), where his political influences quickly ensured he rose through the ranks. Abadi, known for his calculated military acumen, as well as his vicious nature, used his skills and knowledge to ensure he rose through the ranks quickly, finally retiring in 2022 holding the rank of General.
(S) S-2 Comment: It is assessed that Abadi has been working in the background supporting and building Mohammed Nouri al-Karbouli's popularity and fighting base. It is unlikely that Abadi will commit to personally taking up arms, but he will likely use his reputation and charisma to drive SoAK forces forward. His fingerprints will likely be found on all SoAK plans. His finally tested and attuned military prowess will ensure that SoAK operations will be difficult to neutralise.
