US DEPLOYMENT TO IRAQ: Returning to the Middle East

Hundreds of US troops have either arrived in or are on their way to Fallujah and Ramadi, Iraq to support the Iraqi government in their attempts to re-stabilize the region after extremist attacks that targeted mosques, humanitarian camps, civilians, and even US intelligence personnel and nationals working in-country.

During his visit to Baghdad today, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin met with Iraqi leaders to announce that the United States, in close consultation with the Iraq government, will deploy troops to Iraq to assist in re-stabilizing the Al-Anbar Governorate after a regional civil war erupted immediately after Mohammed Nouri al-Karbouli announced his withdrawal from politics.

Austin commended the Iraqi Armed Forces for their quick reaction to the U.S. Marine’s request for assistance within Fallujah just a few days prior, who suddenly found themselves in the middle of an erupting civil war.

Mr. al-Karbouli is one of Iraq’s most influential figures, who have been at the forefront of the constant battle between secular and non-secular  Iraqi groups by representing the religious factions’ interests on a national stage. His withdrawal was unexpected to the majority of his supporters, who have taken to the streets with violence.

Austin also discussed the next steps in the U.S. military’s campaign against the self-titled Sons of al-Karbouli, who have committed the most damage to Iraqi civilians’ lives and infrastructure. The defense secratary announced that, as a show of support to strengthen Iraq-U.S. ties, the U.S. will deploy the  506th Infantry Regiment, known for their decorated history dating back to World War II, to help secure the region.

The campaign will begin with Fallujah, a city just over 40 miles West of Baghdad, then move to the neighboring city of Ramadi, and finally to any other surrounding locales as needed. Austin has stressed the importance of protecting Iraqi civilians from SoAK terror attacks, and that sharing intelligence between U.S. and Iraqi forces will be key to achieving this goal.

The SoAK, as a result of U.S. military presence within the Governorate, have slowly but consistently lost ground and influence. As they become more desperate and thus more violent, the question now becomes: how much more damage will they visit upon the Iraqi people?

The US currently has more than 2,500 troops  in Iraq after the end of its last combat mission in 2021. With this latest deployment, this number is expected to reach 4,000 by the end of January 2025.
