(C) The World in Review -  The Middle East

(C) Israel & Palestine

(C) Tension between Israel and Palestinian forces has continued to deteriorate in the face of increased International pressure. Israel continues to retaliate in force against the palestinian attempts to increase its foothold within the occupied territories. Hamas representatives have continued to increase political pressure on Israel within the international community with its continued ultimate goal of forcing Israel out of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

(C) Recent fighting in the war has spilled over, with Israel engaging in clashes with local militias in the West Bank, Hezbollah in Lebanon and northern Israel, and other Iranian-backed militias in Syria. Iranian-backed militias also engaged in clashes with the United States, while the Houthis blockaded the Red Sea in protest, to which the United States responded with airstrikes in Yemen, Iraq, and Syria.

(C) Yemen

(C) The last United Nations - brokered truce in Yemen ended in October of 2022. While there have not been significant airstrikes or major military offensives since the truce began in April 2022, the warring parties; including Houthi forces, the Yemeni government, and the Saudi- and UAE-led coalition, have continued to commit serious international human rights and humanitarian law violations in Yemen.

(C) Violations include unlawful attacks that have killed civilians; restrictions on freedom of movement and humanitarian access to and from Taiz, Yemen’s third-largest city; arbitrary detentions; and forced internal displacement. Saudi border guards have carried out mass killings of Ethiopian migrants at the Yemeni border, which may amount to crimes against humanity.

(C) On 9 February 2024, the US conducted a total of seven strikes against Houthi unmanned surface vessels, mobile anti-ship cruise missiles, and a LACM that were prepared to launch against ships in the Red Sea. The Houthis said that 17 of its fighters were killed in the strikes.

(C) Recent Attacks

(C) Throughout the region, over the past four months, there has been a noticeable increase of OSINT, indicating that a yet unknown possible, non-state actors have begun a covert campaign of violent intervention. Attacks in most countries have resulted in; Clandestine raids against Vital Infrastructure, disruption of communication, transport, commercial and industrial nodes, and targeted attacks against Western infrastructure  including probing attacks against United States, British, Canadian and Australia, diplomatic posts.

(C) Intelligence Assessment

(C) At this time no one country or organisation has claimed responsibility for this increase in violence across the region. However, some of the tactics, techniques and procedures that have been used point to operations sponsored by, if not conducted by Hezbollah. Worrying though, is the possibility that Quds Force, a branch of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps which specializing in unconventional warfare and military intelligence operations may be involved.
