Very. Just look at a manual or guide on the web for the proper application for your specific CPU.  For instance, my CPU needed a vertical line of paste before the heat sink was attached. Any excess coming out the side can be cleaned up.

It's all preference really. We've had capable pilots using all control schemes. I've personally used keyboard and mouse, HOTAS w/ facetracking, and controllers. I settled with the Steam Controller. It took days to set up properly but was well worth it and I prefer it over anything else.
