(S) SUMMARY OF EVENTS

(S) Following the full-scale invasion of Iraq by the Islamist Republic of Duresh, all militant factions across Al-Anbar Governorate, with the exception of the Lions of the Tigris, have united to fight against invading Dureshi forces under the name of "Al-Abna' al-Watan", or "Sons of the Homeland" (SotH). The identity of the individual or group who is leading this united front has been under investigation by S-2 since first learning of their existence via SIGINT on 17JUL25.

(S) The SotH have since been a visible defensive force around many villages and towns across Anizay, Al-Anbar, and have been confirmed by the IGF to have created diplomatic ties with the Iraqi military via inside channels. As a result, most SotH personnel have been guaranteed combatant immunity against their past militant activities as long as they continue to assist in the defense of Al-Anbar.

(S) Intelligence gathered by Stalker 1 from OP ESCUELLA and KHAS during ODD 09-25, as well as from ODD 08-25 AUXOP Bravo's warlord safe house compound, combined with COMINT and HUMINT sources, have confirmed the identity of the SotH's commander to be General Asad Farid Abadi, former Iraqi Army and ISOF Brigade commander.

(S) INVESTIGATIVE DETAILS

(S) Abadi, originally identified as a key influence behind SoAK activities in 2024, has now transitioned from disgraced militant commander of the SoAK to shadow leader of the newly formed SotH following the Dureshi incursion into Iraq. Credible HUMINT and SIGINT sources confirm that Abadi personally chaired the unification council held in western Al-Anbar on 16JUL25, during which senior representatives from at least seven major insurgent groups ratified the Homeland Charter—a joint declaration of military and political unity against Dureshi occupation. Due to the timeline, it is likely that Abadi has been planning this maneuver for some time, with the invasion accelerating his return to power along with the acceptance of all militant factions involved in the face of a common enemy. A few intelligence sources have also suggested that Abadi was involved with or helped initiate the Dureshi invasion as part of his plan, though not all intelligence sources are in consensus on this theory.

(S) Under Abadi’s leadership, the SotH has begun adopting semi-conventional tactics utilising ex-military officers, ISOF-trained veterans, and captured Dureshi materiel. Early intelligence suggests formation of three main operational sectors: Euphrates, Northern Gate, and Homeland Vanguard. Logistical support reportedly flows through former LoT smuggling channels that have been abandoned since the invasion, which are now under SotH control, although with the official cooperation provided by the Iraqi military, the SotH's logistics are now mostly operating above-ground.

(S) Abadi’s statements to local intermediaries emphasize unity, territorial recovery, and “the restoration of Iraqi dignity.” While the rhetoric appears nationalistic, underlying motives likely include consolidation of political authority and retribution for previous SoAK losses. Although he is still operating from behind the curtain, SotH propaganda channels have already begun portraying the "faceless leader" as “the Shield of the Homeland," who has hidden himself to avoid attention, likely in preparation for his publicised return to Iraqi politics in the near future.

(S) S-2 Comment: It is assessed that Abadi’s ascension has solidified his position as the most capable and influential insurgent commander currently operating within western Iraq. His combined military acumen, charisma, and established networks within both the militant factions and the Iraqi military present a long-term challenge to any efforts aimed at dislodging or detaining him, especially while the SotH's actions against the Dureshi invasion are still recent. As the Iraqi military has already granted most SotH militants combatant immunity and full cooperation, all BLUFOR will respect and maintain relations with the SotH as INDFOR until further notice.
