Is it possible to have steam not copy my configuration between PCs?

My desktop is a 2k resolution machine and my laptop is 1920x1080 but I have noticed since I got the laptop last month if I fire up a game on it then it will replace the settings and that invariably will mess up multiple things but especially video. Can they be decoupled?

I would duplicate a profile and then have a profile for your desktop and one for your laptop. I believe all settings are tied to your profiles, so you would need to have separate ones.
